The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s annual Green Buildings Open House (GBOH), the largest sustainable energy event in the Northeast, will take place on the Upper Cape on October 5, 2013 from 10 AM to 4 PM.  On this day, local homes, businesses, and schools invite the public to investigate the renewable technologies and green building features employed on site.

Come see how residents in Falmouth cut down on their energy use with wind power, solar photovoltaics (PV), solar space heating, energy efficiency, eco-toilets and landscape features for energy efficiency, nutrient recycling and food.

Several areas of The Green Center (the umbrella organization of the Cape Cod Eco Toilet Center) will be open for a tour: the Cape Cod Ark, the sustainable gardens, the Alchemy Farm Association’s common building, and the Eco Toilet Center. In addition to the tours, which take place between 10 AM to 4 PM, volunteers will give a series of workshops:

  • 12-12:30 PM: Eco-Toilets
  • 12:30-1:00 PM: Landscaping for energy conservation, nutrient recycling and food
  • 1-2 PM: Eco-House tour
  • 10 AM- noon & 2- 3 PM: open for general Q&A

The goal of GBOH is to enable participants to see energy efficiency and renewable energy improvements in their communities, and motivate them to adopt similar solutions in their own homes. At host sites participants are able to talk with home and business owners, ask questions, and see how their renewable energy technologies actually work. Last year more than 10,000 people toured close to 500 sites from Maine to Pennsylvania, and this year’s event is expected to be even bigger!

Several buildings in Falmouth will be part of this year’s Green Buildings Open House.  GBOH operates in conjunction with the American Solar Energy Society’s (ASES) National Solar Tour and helps to kick off National Energy Awareness Month.
